New to White Dog. New to Pilates and Yoga?

Here is some information to help you out.

“Why are we called White Dog?

When we started the studio in 2010 it was called TWD Pilates.

We – my daughter Tess and I – always said it was for ‘The Weirdest Dog’ because we had a weird white dog aka Ralph. But that wasn’t the case. It was just easier to say that than explain that I had been walking with the metaphorical Black Dog for a long time and needed a way out.

In the dark times of my adult life the two things that have sustained me are the company of hounds and the discipline of movement.

White Dog studio is the physical expression and now the virtual expression of these twin pillars of sustenance. The light that sits behind the dark.

Well into my 4th decade and nearing the first decade of the studio, we (Jo and I) are clearer and clearer every day on our shared mission and vision to live and help others live a second half of life better than the first. First and foremost through movement.

What do we mean by the second half? Not the years after 40 or 50.

We mean what author David Brooks calls the second mountain.

The life that comes after the inflection point at which we realise our life is not an ‘I’ game but a ‘we’ game.

The life we lead when we realise that our happiness is intertwined with the contribution we can make to other lives, that our own physical wellness is a responsibility that allows us to enjoy the relationships that define us with the greatest level of contribution.”

The key distinction of a virtual classroom is that it takes place live, in real time and it is not recorded to be used at a later date.

Relax we have got you.

Our studio offers a ‘non contact’ booking system that allows you to book in and out easily.

We ask that you arrive close to the start time of your class.

We have no expectations at all and you definitely do not need to be flexible or super strong.

Our instructors are experienced and more than happy to show you the ropes and springs as they guide you along the way.

If you don’t have any injuries that significantly affect daily movement we suggest starting with our Introductory Offer which applies to all general group classes.

Strength Reformer, Mat Pilates and/or Yoga 1 are the best place to start your White Dog movement journey. Your instructor will know you are a beginner. They see a note in their class role that alerts them that you are new to the studio..

If you are keen for a challenge, Strength & Cardio Reformer (Pilates) and Surya Namaska (Yoga) are more intense.

To purchase the $45 intro offer,  please click here and start booking.

If you are injured, pregnant or wanting a little more attention at the beginning we suggest you start with Clinical Pilates or a 1:1.
(please check our timetables prior to making your purchase)

Our rooms are kept at a comfortable temperature.

There is no need for special active wear or sweat towels.  Simply wear clothing that is suitable for exercise.

If you are injured in a way that effects your normal movement significantly, we recommend clearance form your Physiotherapist/Osteopath/GP before commencing classes.

If your injury is acute (red/hot/swollen) or recently post operation we also recommend clearance from a health professional before commencing classes.

Chronic pain – associated with injuries no longer red/hot/swollen – usually responds very well to exercise and the national guidelines recommend maintaining as close to normal activity levels. This includes, rotator cuff syndrome (shoulder impingement) tendinopathies,  lower back pain, hip/shoulder/knee bursitis, meniscal issues

Our instructors are experienced and trained to work with a wide variety of injures and pain conditions, just let your instructor know before class and they will look after you.

Clinical Pilates differs from Physiotherapy, Osteopathy and general Pilates as it takes into account an individual’s specific injuries and physical needs, instead of having every person working in the same way.

Clinical Pilates does not involve manual hands on manipulation.

The staff in a Clinical Pilates session have expert knowledge and training in movement based therapy that will help you build strength and regain mobility through physical movement. They work closely with individual clients to offer Pilates exercises that suit each individuals needs, using specialised pilates apparatus like the Reformer bed, Trapeze table and Wunda Chair.

Prenatal: We require all new clients to book a 1:1 assessment with us prior to attending group classes.

If you are an existing student and have not attended studio for a period of 12 weeks we recommend a 1:1 assessment prior to resuming group classes.

This is an essential part of the way we care for you and your babe. In this session your instructor will assess which class/es are suitable for you to attend moving forward, and go through any modifications required in class.

Postnatal: General Group exercise can be resumed after pregnancy however it should be done so gradually because of the normal deconditioning in the initial postpartum period. Generally, gradual exercise may begin 4-6 weeks after a ‘normal’ vaginal delivery or 8-10 weeks (with Medical clearance) after a caesarean section delivery. Women who maintained a more rigorous routine prior to and during pregnancy may be able to resume exercise sooner. Light to moderate intensity exercise is recommended in the postpartum period.
Based on the current guidelines we ask all pre and post natal women to attend a 1:1 session once cleared by their healthcare provider.

In this 1:1 session our aim is to address any concerns or specific considerations you may have before transitioning you into a small group clinical setting and then on to general group classes.
